Carotid arteries are the two large blood vessels that run down the neck on either side and send blood to your brain. If the arteries get clogged with cholesterol, they can become narrower. This is dangerous because if you develop a blood clot and the blood cannot reach your brain, you could have a stroke.

If you feel like you might be at risk because of clogged arteries, you may want to have a vascular screening to check your risk factors. There are five different screenings to help you understand what you may be up against in the future and to also help you combat illnesses before they become a problem.

You can be screened for carotid artery disease or plaque build-up in the arteries. This procedure is simple and painless as well as non-invasive. The technology utilizes Doppler color to flow ultrasound technology and creates images of the arteries in that region while showing how much blood is flowing within them.

A vascular screening is used as a preventative tool to detect early warning signs from issues that may not show symptoms. Ideal candidates for a vascular screening are men and woman between the ages of 40 and 70. If you have a family history of any venous or cholesterol disorders, you should consider a vascular screening sooner rather than later. A family history increases your likelihood of developing the condition.

At Miami Vein Center, our vascular screening will check for three different issues: Carotid Artery Disease, Peripheral Artery Disease, and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. These screenings are done as a preventative measure as many of our patients don’t show symptoms. The screening process allows our medical team to gain insight into any underlying or pre-existing issues. Our vascular screening checks for fatty deposits in the arteries.

Following your vascular screening, our medical team will review the results with you and determine any following courses of action. We can determine whether or not you are at risk of developing any conditions or if there are any follow-up treatments that we can provide.

Vascular screening can include several tests that give you a more in-depth understanding of your health and risks for serious illnesses. At Miami Vein Center, our medical team is led by vascular surgeon Dr. Jose Almeida. Specializing in endovenous surgery, Dr. Almeida our board certified vascular surgeon, can work with you to determine the safest and most effective treatments for your needs.
