Venous insufficiency represents one of the most problematic conditions in the world of health. It can bring numerous undesirable side effects, which include everything from changes in the appearance of the veins to a heightened risk of heart attacks.

Vein stenting represents one of the options that may be used to correct venous insufficiency. This minimally-invasive procedure can correct some of the irregularities that may lead to venous insufficiency by repairing one or more veins.

Vein stenting involves planting an artificial device designed to widen a narrowed vein. This can allow significantly more blood to flow through the opened vein while providing a repair that can last the remainder of the patient’s life. The stent may be used to alleviate the symptoms of venous insufficiency, irregular blood flow, congenital defects revolving around the narrowing of a vein and many other vein-related conditions. The procedure itself is minimally-invasive.

How Does Vein Stenting Work?

Stenting can be considered a procedure designed to reverse the narrowing of the veins without replacing the veins. It utilizes a mesh designed to provide a substantial amount of support to the vein once the stent has been expanded.

When the stent is in place, it will typically integrate with the nearby venous wall. This allows the vein to stay expanded while providing an increased flow of blood, which in turn can alleviate the symptoms of venous insufficiency in certain areas of the body.

Why Does Vein Stenting Benefit a Patient?

There are a few reasons why a patient may choose to undergo a stenting procedure. These include:

  • Increasing the amount of blood that can flow through a part of the body – This may involve the veins near the heart, near the legs or anywhere else in the body where venous insufficiency occurs.
  • Reducing fluid build-up – Blood carries water throughout the body. When blood is unable to flow at the correct rate, water tends to accumulate in the extremities. Stenting can allow blood to be carried away from sites like the leg, which can treat swelling related to venous insufficiency.
  • Correcting structural anomalies – Correcting structural anomalies in the veins tends to be a challenging task. Vein grafts, for example, may solve one problem while creating new problems and risks for the patient. Stents are a reliable way to correct venous irregularities.
  • Minimally-invasive procedure – This means that it takes less effort to perform and tends to benefit the patient with less recovery time than other procedures would require.
