Many venous diseases affecting the veins in the legs can cause numerous problems. Vein disease can cause painful legs, discoloration of the skin, make the skin more prone to bruising, force the legs to swell, or create other symptoms that can cause pain in the legs. Understanding how the leg veins work and what conditions affect them can help understand why there is such a wide range of symptoms that patients can feel. Not all conditions cause the same type or amount of pain.

How Do the Leg Veins Work?

The veins located in a person’s legs are unique from the other veins in the body. They must accommodate extra pressure to circulate blood throughout them due to the forces of gravity that must be overcome. When blood fails to circulate as easily, or these veins become partially or completely obstructed, numerous diseases present themselves.

These diseases occur because of how the blood is diverted, how much blood is diverted, underlying genetic predispositions, damage to the legs or their veins, and other causes. The symptoms associated with leg vein diseases may grow progressively worse until blood flow becomes severely restricted within the legs.

Common Leg Vein Diseases Responsible for Pain

The way venous diseases cause pain differs from disease to disease due to the numerous causes each condition can have.

Consider varicose veins as an example of this. This condition causes the veins to expand and stretch over time. This may lead to no pain with visible symptoms or pain that exists at just the level of an itch. The amount of stretching of the veins and the reason for it will affect the level of pain experienced.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is another venous disease that can affect the legs. This condition is often marked by a large amount of pain in the area where the clot occurs. This clot may blood a significant amount of blood, which in turn may cause more pain.

Other conditions may completely restrict blood flow to certain parts of the legs. This can result in atrophy of tissues due to the lack of nutrients that the blood carries. This can cause weakness in the muscles, or it can cause them to ache. Even partial restriction in the flow of blood can make things like cramps more common and severe. They may last for minutes rather than seconds.

Conditions that cause the legs to swell may cause the legs to feel painful. Movement may create pain due to the interaction of fluid with the muscles.
